How to play Janggi (Korean Chess)

Goal: Put the opposing general in check so that it cannot escape (checkmate).
Board and pieces: Pieces sit on the intersections of a 9×10 grid. Each side starts with 16 pieces: 1 general, 2 chariots, 2 cannons, 2 horses, 2 elephants, 2 guards and 5 soldiers. Cho (楚, blue/green) moves first, and each side chooses its horse and elephant setup before the game.
Palace: Each side has a 3×3 palace with diagonal lines. The general and guards may not leave it.
Check: Attacking the general is called janggun (check). The opponent must escape or block it.

Piece	Movement
General, Guard	One step along the lines inside the palace
Chariot	Any distance in a straight line (including palace diagonals)
Cannon	Must jump over exactly one piece. Cannot jump over or capture another cannon
Horse	One step straight, then one diagonal. Blocked if the first point is occupied
Elephant	One step straight, then two diagonal. Blocked if the path is occupied
Soldier	One step forward or sideways (never backward)

No bikjang: Generals facing each other does not end the game in a draw.
Point counting: Chariot 13, cannon 7, horse 5, elephant 3, guard 3, soldier 2. Han (漢), who moves second, gets 1.5 bonus points (Cho 72, Han 73.5 at the start). If the move limit is reached, the side with more points wins.
No repetition: You may not play a move that creates the same position for the third time.
Pass: You may pass your turn when you are not in check. If both players pass in a row, the game is decided on points.
Move limit: When the game reaches 200 moves in total (passes included), it is decided on points.

Before the game, choose your side (Cho or Han) and your horse/elephant setup. Your side is always shown at the bottom.
Tap a piece to see where it can go, then tap a destination or drag the piece there.
Piece labels can be shown as Hanja, Hangul or letters (K general, G guard, E elephant, H horse, R chariot, C cannon, S soldier).
